Working Knowledge of Construction Systems
The Architect should be knowledgeable to be able to evaluate the different construction systems and techniques available and suitable for a given project.
Example: To study the economical impact of using a light steel frame in lieu of wood construction with the possibility of adding an extra floor to the project.
Thorough Preparation of the Construction Documents
A clear, well detailed and coordinated set of construction documents (working drawings and specifications) is of utmost importance, even for a simple project. In
this matter, there are no short cuts. Discrepancies, omissions, and errors can result in extra construction costs. Lack of proper detailing allows for in-the-field
interpretations that may be in conflict with the quality of the design. There are no shortcuts in the preparation of the contract documents. The use of computer
assisted drawings (CAD) is a great help towards realizing these objectives.
The Architect’s Active Participation During the Construction Phase
The Architect should actively participate during the actual construction process as to assure that the intent of the construction documents is carried through.
These activities include: periodical inspections of the job-site to verify the quality of the construction in progress, review of material samples and equipment
submittals, review of shop drawings, periodical on-site meetings with the different members of the design and construction teams, issuance of certificate of
payments, preparation of punch lists before completion, etc. Thus, other than the Owner, the Architect remains as the only connecting link between all the
phases of the project.
The Architect’s other skills
Apart from mastering his profession, the Architect should be aware of his time and place. This includes knowledge of local issues such as City’s zoning politics
and effect of his work in the neighborhood, etc., as well as being well versed in real estate economics. In addition the Architect should be able to act as a
competent negotiator on behalf of the Owner as well as a coordinator and moderator between different parties involved in the design, permitting and
construction of the project.
