- main index DQAI architectural practice rests in a set of beliefs and principles such as the following: Each Project is Unique Each individual project has its own set of objectives, functions, requirements and restrains such as building codes, budget, site conditions, etc. It is important to identify all the major factors that may affect a project from the early stages of the design work. Example: Preparing a comprehensive program of functional requirements for a given project. Proper Relations with the Owner It is important that direct and frequent communication with the Owner is maintained at all times. The Architect shall be a good listener and be able to quickly respond to Owner’s concerns and to keep the Owner informed at all times. Maintenance of Design Objectivity An objective approach to design is preferable to shoehorning a preconceived favorite idea. There is the need of a “what if” frame of mind. Example: Exploring a number of possible systems of construction for a given project in order to determine the most suitable one. The Architect as Generalist A generalist design approach is one that involves all the necessary consultants from the early inception of the project. This approach is preferred to one where the different disciplines are dealt in a sequential manner. Example: During the early stages of the design of a high-rise building, the architectural forms may be greatly affected by the structural approach. In this case, the Architect with a general knowledge of possible structural and mechanical systems can assist in development of the basic design concept. Innovation The Architect should be aware of the latest advances in construction technologies through constant review of published technical information and direct observation of innovative buildings. As the design parameters for a given project becomes more restrictive, there is an opportunity to reach fresh solutions. Here actions covered by the commonly used phrase of “thinking outside the box” may be justified. The Architect as Leader of the Design Team Most projects require the input of a number of consultants specializing in different disciplines such as structural, mechanical, electrical, fire-protection, acoustics, etc. depending on its nature and scope. In addition, the Architect is required to coordinate his work with independent consultants hired by the Owner such as interior designers and landscape architects. The Architect should have sufficient knowledge of the different specialties in order to be conversant with its consultants as well as properly coordinate their work with his own. more... de quesada architects, inc. brief history beliefs projects testimonials contact 3030 bridgeway, sausalito, ca 94965, Suite 201                       tel. 415 331 1718, fax. 415 331 1829
